Wakayama – Japan, August 1, 2017 (Tuesday): A recent discussion between Japan’s Leading Democratic Party (LDP) and the Wakayama Prefecture Governor Nisaka included questioning as to Wakayama’s previous announcements to only accept foreign visitors to any future integrated resort (IR) development.
During the routine Prefectural Council meeting, the issue was brought up in relation to the Governor’s previous statements which noted Wakayama would not allow Japanese citizens entry into any future locally-developed IR. When asked specifically if he would consider shifting this policy in the future, Governor Nisaka noted that this statement was made with regards to protecting Japanese citizens from the ill-effects of gambling addition. The governor did however note that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has confirmed any IR development will follow stringent rules and establish tightly controlled regulations, including those around problem gaming issues. With this in mind, the Governor noted that while he believes at this time the “foreigner-only” policy is still warranted, there may be reasons to shift this policy assuming the future responsible gaming regulations are effective and accepted by Japanese citizens.
The Japan Gaming Congress (JgC), to be hosted at Conrad Tokyo, on May 10 to 11 2018, will dive even deeper into this topic. To find out more, please visite: www.japangamingcongress.com
